The Religious Right Was Right All Along
Bible-totin' Christians have tried to warn us all along of the dangers that relaxing the definition of marriage to include gay couples would entail. Over and over they tried to explain how by allowing this one aberration we'd be opening the floodgates for unspeakable and unnatural depravities to seep in and irreversibly stain the fabric of our God fearing society. Well I'll be damned, the fuckers were right.

The House Made of Straw (and the Storm That Blew It to Shreds)
Polly Toynbee's article in The Guardian speaking about the ugly American reality exposed by Katrina:
it took Hurricane Katrina to expose the real emptiness under the US carapace. No wonder governing Iraq was far beyond the competence of a nation so feebly governed within its own borders. How does a state where half the voters don't believe in government, run anything well? A nation ideologically and constitutionally committed to non-government is bound to crumble at the core. Rome had no doubts about governance.
Amen sister!

Speaking of Manicured National Images...
FEMA is being accused of censorship after it "requested" that the media refrain from taking and/or broadcasting images of the bodies which now float scattered in the sewage and chemical infested waters that blanket New Orleans. This government entity claims its actions are driven by a desire to treat those who perished and their families with dignity and respect, but truly the only dignity at risk is that of Bush and crew. As anybody'll tell you, the sight of thousands of preventable casualties in the streets of a major American city is just no good for those in the lucrative business of war.

Getaway to Gaza
Now that the invaders are out, the Palestinian Authority is turning their efforts to soften the image of The Gaza Strip in the world's eye. It sounds to me like the ultimate branding challenge, which is not to say it'll be impossible. Just look at Croatia.

Bye Bye Terri
Terri Schiavo now rests in peace, and Feeding Tubes' 15 minutes are up. We'll miss her, she had so much to give. It'll be interesting now to sit back and watch the fallout from this whole thing. Suddenly again, not so fun for the democrats.
Seriously though, a lot of questions have been left unanswered, and frankly I'm considering drafing a living will to clear up the matter should I ever find myself crippled by anorexia (ha! right). OK, serious again: this article in Newsweek tries to tackle the massive topic of self-determination.
Now back to the humor!
